The Cambodian People's Party (CPP) has commemorated the birth of the United Front for the Salvation of Kampuchea, an anti-Khmer Rouge movement set up on 2nd December 1978 along the Khmer-Vietnamese border that eventually toppled the Khmer Rouge regime on 7th January 1979, reports Radio Free Asia.

Mr. Heng Samrin, the founding leader of the movement and currently the honourary president of the CPP and chairman of the Cambodian National Assembly, said that all Cambodians must never forget this day. "We all must remember today as the most important day for the rebirth of Cambodia and the Cambodian people. The 2nd December Front not only saved us from the calamity of the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime, but 2nd December Front had helped to rebuild and to develop our nation in every direction. It helped to change our nation and continuously changing the outlook of our nation that make us to feel very proud", he said.

He also lauded Mr. Hun Sen for appointing Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, the fugitive ex-Thai PM, as government economic advisor as a way to help pull Cambodia out of the world economic reccession.

United Front for the Salvation of Kampuchea was founded on 2nd December in 1978 at Cheung Thnou village, Snoul district in Katie province. CPP officials claimed that the Front was created by gathering all anti-Khmer Rouge forces operating along the Khmer-Vietnamese borders with the assistance and supports of the Vietnamese Army.

Mr. Pen Sovan claimed that Hun Sen was not the original leader of the anti-Khmer Rouge movement, but Hun Sen claimed he was the original leader of the Movement. However, we can't see him in this picture, so may be he was not the original leader as claimed by Mr. Pen Sovan.

Even if he was the original leader, may be he was not one of the important leaders, may be he was just an ordinary leader, that's why his picture did not appear in this photo because the ones in this photo were important leaders of the anti-Khmer Rouge movement in 1979.
