ROAD SAFETY
Prime Minister Hun Sen issued a sub-decree on the use of sirens for road vehicles on Monday, with the aim of preventing their improper use. Him Yan, director of the department of public order at the National Police, said that people have been abusing the privilege of using sirens, thus causing public disorder and traffic jams. “Deputy prime ministers cannot use sirens now,” he said. The sub-decree states that besides emergency situations involving ambulances and fire trucks, the use of sirens can be used only by members of Cambodia’s Royal family, the presidents of the Senate and National Assembly, and the prime minister. Foreign delegates whose rank is equivalent to a deputy minister or higher can also use sirens in their motorcades. Ambulances and members of the police, military and fire department may also use sirens during parades, according to the new regulation. Heng Chantheary, chief of the municipal Traffic Police, said Wednesday that he will implement the sub-decree once he receives the proper orders.
