Foreign commercials banned from Khmer TVs

Khieu Kanharith addressing the seminar.

By Khmerization

The Ministry of Information has banned all foreign commercials from being broadcast on Khmer TVs as a means to promote Khmer artists and provide employment to Khmer actors and actresses, Deum Ampil quoted Minister Khieu Kanharith as saying.

The ban was announced by Minister Kanharith during a seminar on the promotion of film productions on TV held on 20th November. The Minister said, from now on, all the more than 10 TV stations will be required to play all Cambodian-produced commercials starred by Cambodian actors and actresses.

The Minister said that all TV stations are also required to play at least some Cambodian films in their daily programs as a measure to help stimulate the fledgling Khmer film industry. In the past, foreign films dominated the Cambodian TV screens.

These bans do not affect sports programs where foreign sports will be allowed to be broadcast on Khmer TVs as normal, but they will incur a hefty tax rate.

I support this ban because it helps to boost Khmer film industry and also provide employment to local Khmer actors and actresses.
