Cambodian torture chief accused of duping court

In this photo released by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, Kaing Guek Eav, the former chief of the Khmer Rouge's notorious S-21 prison, now known as Tuol Sleng genocide museum, is seen in the courtroom of the U.N.-backed tribunal, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009. Also known as Duch, Kaing Guek Eav is charged with crimes against humanity, war crimes, murder and torture, and is the first of five defendants scheduled for long-delayed trials by the tribunal.

In Cambodia, closing statements have begun at the trial of the only Khmer Rouge leader to apologise publicly for his actions.

The man, known as Comrade Duch, is accused of war crimes, while he was the head of an infamous khmer rouge prison. Victims' lawyers have accused Duch of duping the court with "crocodile tears" as he gave evidence. Even if he's found guilty, there's scepticism about how much the UN-backed trial can achieve for those who suffered under Pol Pot's murderous regime.

Presenter: Sarah Dingle
Speakers: Karim Khan, lawyer for civil parties in the case against Duch; Nic Dunlop, author, The Lost Executioner
