Cambodia will retaliate if Thailand closes its borders

By Khmerization

A tit-for-tat diplomatic retaliations between Cambodia and Thailand over Cambodia's appointment of fugitive ex-Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra seems to be worsened after both sides have recalled their respective ambassadors.

The Thai government is to ask the Thai parliament to cancel Memorandum of Understanding on land border and maritime border agreements signed in 2001 and 2003 by the Cambodian and the then Thaksin government. However, Mr. Var Kimhong, Cambodian chief border negotiator, told Deum Ampil newspaper that the Memorandum of Understanding on borders were signed by both Cambodian and Thai sides, therefore the Thai side cannot unilaterally cancel the agreements.

The diplomatic situations have caused a chain reaction by the day. Thai Deputy PM Mr. Suthep Thaugsuban has now threatened to close Thailand's borders with Cambodia in protest over Thaksin's appointment. Mr. Koy Kuong (pictured), spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, told Deum Ampil that Cambodia will retaliate. "If the Thai side closes its borders with Cambodia, Cambodia will also close its borders with Thailand", he said.
