Cambodia's Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, So Khun has called on the country's nine mobile phone networks to share share their network infrastructure to reduce the number of towers being deployed in the country.
Speaking in Phnom Penh at a conference on the issue that included private-sector representatives, So Khun told the Phnom Penh Post the initiative would avoid duplication of infrastructure, thereby reducing the sector's expenses and its potential impact on the Kingdom's skyline.
"We do not want to see too many antennas dotted along roads in the future," he said.
The government has granted a private company a 35-year license to build a shared network infrastructure across the country. The company, Tower Master is 80% owned by an unknown Malaysian company, with the remainder held by a Cambodian national. However, the company is planning an initial investment of just US$20 million, which is a fraction of the amount needed for a national network.
Despite having nine networks, figures from the Mobile World analysts shows that the country had just 4.23 million mobile phone subscribers at the end of June. This is a population penetration level of 29%.
