By Khmerization

A delegation of Cambodian parliamentarians led by National Assembly President Heng Samrin (pictured) hopes to ask Russia to cancel debts it owed from the 1980s to the early 1990s, reports Khmer Sthapana.

Mr. Heng Samrin will lead a delegation of parliamentarians to visit Russia from 4th to 10th November and one of the top agenda will be to request Russia to cancel debts totalling $1.5 billion Cambodia owed since the 1980s.

According to the press release, the Cambodian delegation will meet with the Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, meet with Mr. Sergey M.Mironov, President of the Council of the Russian Federation and other senior Russian leaders.

Mr. Cheam Yeap, chairman of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, said that top of the agenda will be to ask Russia to forgive the $1.5 billion. Mr. Cheam Yeap added that Mr. Heng Samrin had once raised the issue of debt cancellation in 2006.

Mr. Cheam Yeap also said that other issues on the agenda would be to strengthen the relations between Cambodia and Russia, to push for more Russian investments in Cambodia, to push for increased Russian tourism to Cambodia. But most importantly the delegation hopes to request for a total cancellation of the 1.5 billion debts Cambodia owed Russia since the Soviet Union era of the 1980s and 1990s.
