Asia's rookies plan Cambodia shock

Thursday 5th November 2009

Himmat Rai

India's Himmat Rai and Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat are out to surprise at the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open from November 19 to 22.

The duo have been in contention for their maiden Asian Tour title this season but failed to pull off the finishing touches. They will look to redeem themselves at the penultimate full field Asian Tour event at the Phokeethra Country Club in Siem Reap.

Among other Asian Tour stars who will headline the tournament are 11-time Asian winner Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand, Hero Honda Indian Open champion C. Muniyappa of India, third on the Order of Merit Anthony Kang of the United States and inaugural Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open winner Bryan Saltus of the United States.

Kiradech, whose grip-it-and-rip-it style earned him three top-10s this season, will be looking forward to better his second place finish at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters in Malaysia where he was leader after the third round.

Kiradech conceded that pressure got to him in the tournament where Australia's Rick Kulacz won but the big-hitting Thai remains resolute of claiming his first Asian Tour title.

"After that week, I know I have a very good chance to win on the Asian Tour. I have learned a lot like planning my shots and not to think too much," said the two-time World Junior Champion.

India's rising star Rai can also walk tall after going head-to-head with Asian Tour honorary member K.J. Choi of Korea before settling for tied third at the Iskandar Johor Open.

"Playing with K.J Choi and the amount that I learnt from him is unbelievable. His concentration is very good and he hit some really great shots. Having played well, I'm beginning to feel much more confident about my game. I'm just looking forward to playing on the Asian Tour and playing my heart out," said the 22-year-old.

Kiradech and Rai will seek inspiration from South African James Kamte and Muniyappa who both tasted victory in their first year on the Asian Tour by winning the Asian Tour International and Hero Honda Indian Open respectively.
