The Thai embassy in Kuala Lumpur has been instructed to monitor the activities of Puea Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh (pictured), who plans to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Thani Thongphakdi, deputy director-general of the Department of Information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Wednesday.
Last week, Gen Chavalit travelled to Phnom Penh to meet Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. He came back and said that Hun Sen would welcome ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra to Cambodia "any time". His visit sparked a furious backlash from the government after he insisted that he would embark on trips to Burma and Malaysia.
Mr Thani said he believes the Malaysian government understands well that Gen Chavalit would be on a personal visit, and it has nothing to do with the government.
He said that the ministry would wait to see the outcome of Gen Chavalit's trip.
