The opposition says the law violates freedom of expression. |
The Cambodian parliament has passed a law banning gatherings of over 200 people amid concerns that the government is trying to silence the voices of dissent.
Lawmakers from the ruling Cambodian People's Party said Wednesday that the legislation would ensure security and help maintain public order.
The legislation also requires groups to obtain a permit five days in advance of their planned protests.
The opposition, however, believes that the law violates the freedom of expression and silences voices raised against the government.
