Three imminent Khmer historians from the Royal Academy of Cambodia rejected the Thai ultra-nationalists staking claims to the 4.6 km2 land areas surrounding the Preah Vihear temple as "ignorant" of the history.

The three historians' reactions came one day after the Thai yellow shirted protesters attacked Thai villagers and police who blocked them from marching to the disputed zones on 19th September to reclaim the lands.

Prof. Kim Sarin, Prof. Iv Chan and Prof. Eng Yeng, all from the Royal Academy of Cambodia, held a press conference on the night of 2oth September and said that the claims by these Thai ultra-nationalists are incorrect and are resulted from their ignorance of the history of the 100 year-old border agreement between the two country.

The three academics blamed previous Thai generations for not teaching correct history to the new generations of Thai students. They also blamed Thai authority for faking history of Preah Vihear temple by unilaterally drawing maps putting the areas inside Thai territories.

In order to end the misunderstandings, the three professors propose that academics from both countries, throught the Khmer-Thai Cultural Committee, research and compile documents to educate and teach students of both countries the correct Khmer-Thai history.

The three professors also appealed to Thai people to respect international laws of the 1904-1907 Khmer-Thai treaty and the 1962 judgement of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that gave exclusive ownership of the temple and the surrounding areas to Cambodia.

"There are no overlapping areas of the 4.6 km2 of lands at Preah Vihear temple because the International Court of Justice recognised the temple and the lands in the areas as belonging to Cambodia and the International Court of Justice has ordered the withdrawal of Thai troops, police and guards from the Preah Vihear temple", said Prof. Iv Chan by referring to the ICJ judgement of 15th July 1962.

It is dangerous for Thais to teach fake history to the younger generations. Correct history must be taught. Thai authority has been faking history for a very long time. It's time they teach their students correct history in relations to their neighboring countries, Cambodia in particular. Preah Vihear and lands around the temple belong to Cambodia. Check the 1908 maps and 1907 treaty signed by Cambodia and Thailand.
