The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has appealed to the Cambodian government to help protect and stop legal threats against human rights activists for carrying out their duties to defend the interests of the people.

Recently, Mr. Pen Bunna, human rights defender for the human rights group Adhoc based in Rattanakiri province, have been sued by government officials for helping the tribal people to demand that those officials return their lands which were confiscated earlier. Mr. Pen Bunna has to be moved to another assignment before the court agreed to drop charges of incitement against him.

A Licadho activist, Mr. Oung Samith and Mr. Pen Bunlay, a human rights activist for another human rights group called Vigilance, have been under investigation by the court for helping 100 people staging protests to demand the release of 4 people who were arrested for trying to stop the confiscations of their lands.

The Asian Human Rights Commission issued a statement strongly urges the Cambodian government to respect all its international human rights obligations, especially respect the rights of the people, rights of human rights defenders and human rights organisations so that they could fulfill their duties in the defence of human rights in Cambodia.

The statement added that the Cambodian government not only violates the Paris Peace Accords, but also violates the Cambodian Constitution such as Article 31 on human rights and Article 35 on freedom of activities.

In 2008, there are 63 cases of threats of legal actions and threats of arrests against human rights activists in Cambodia.

Mr. Chan Saveth, investigator for human rights group Adhoc, said the democratisation process and the human rights issues in Cambodia require the co-operations and the participations of the Cambodian government in order for democracy to mature in Cambodia.

Mr. Om Yintieng (pictured), senior prime ministrial advisor and head of government's Human Rights Commission, rebuked the AHRC's statement as false by telling the AHRC not to worry about human rights respect in Cambodia. However, he thanks the AHRC for its human rights concerns by saying that this shows that the AHRC has confidence in the human rights records of the Cambodian government.

Human rights abuses happened everywhere in Cambodia. Om Yintieng is the head of human rights abuse commission, not the head of human rights protection commission.
