LOS ANGELES—Three Americans who were expelled from Cambodia have been formally indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of engaging in sex tourism with children abroad.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say Ronald Boyajian, Erik Peeters and Jack Sporich were indicted Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The three men are the first defendants to be charged under "Operation Twisted Traveler," an international initiative to crack down on Americans who travel to Cambodia to have sex with minors.

ICE and the Department of Justice worked with the Department of State, Cambodian police and non-profits to identify the defendants.

Each could face up to 30 years in prison per victim if convicted. They are in custody and scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in U.S. District Court.

A man convicted in Ventura County in 1988 on multiple molestation charges was one of three people indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury on allegations that they traveled to Cambodia to have sex with children, authorities said.

They were the first three defendants charged under an international law enforcement initiative targeting Americans who travel to the Southeast Asian nation to sexually exploit children, authorities said.

The three are Jack Louis Sporich, 75, formerly of Santa Monica and now a resident of Sedona, Ariz., whose 1988 case was followed by a state prison sentence; Ronald Gerard Boyajian, 49, of Menlo Park; and Erik Leonardus Peeters, 41, of Norwalk, according to authorities.

The men are accused of international travel and engaging in illicit sexual conduct with minors, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in federal prison for each count. The defendants were arrested in Cambodia and brought to the United States two weeks ago. They are scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 21.
