World Bank Asks for more Work on Land Reform, Corruption Law

World Bank representative in Cambodia Qimiao Fan stated on Wednesday at a meeting with Cambodian deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Sok An (pictured) the Cambodian Government should continue with land reform and pass the long-awaited Corruption Law.
During the meeting, Qimiao Fan said that the World Bank (WB) and Cambodian Government’s listing of land projects and provision of land titles would be a great achievement and a smart policy.

The purpose of the WB’s reports to the Cambodian Government is “not only to show the Cambodian Government’s wrongdoings, but we would also like to show our admiration of the Cambodian Government’s efforts. So, as to all remaining issue, we should work together further.”
Donor countries and well-respected international organizations have harshly criticized the Cambodian Government for violent evictions of poor communities and rampant land grabbing. Non-transparent allocations of land concessions have also bee condemned. The long-awaited Corruption Law and the new Criminal Code have been other bones of contention.
“We depend on the Cambodian Government toward to achieve,” Qimiao Fan said. “We hope the Cambodian Criminal Code will be finished and Corruption Law too.”
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An said that both laws are finished, and will be approved at a parliamentary session.
“The Cambodian Government welcomes all statements of the WB report and we are cooperating,” Sok An said.
