Vietnam Exports Cambodian Rice to Thailand

DAP News

A seemingly never ending procession of trucks has been taking rice from Vietnam to Thailand, rice that was reportedly bought by Vietnamese traders in Cambodia.

The exports are especially taking place via Cambodia’s Takeo province, but also have been seen in Takeo, Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kompong Speu, Kompong Chhnang, Pusat, Battambang and Banteay Meanchey.

“Our bosses have paid money already to custom officials stationed in those places by their illegal intervention from Cambodia-VN border to Cambodia-Thai border pass through National Highway 5,” a truck driver, who asked to not be named, told DAP News Cambodia on Friday.

“Our boss telephones to ask for a green light from custom officials,” he said. “If the local provincial authorities say OK, we move.”

Custom officials confirmed that they are willing to acknowledge that trucks export rice to Thailand via National Highway. “If it applies to the law, the exporters have to show payment receipts so as to increase the national budget,” one official said. “If is illegal exporting, it will affect the budget.”

There is the proof, an unfair trade practices between Thailand and Vietnam. Vietnam bought rice from poor Cambodian rice farmers for a really cheap price, process in Vietnam and resell to Thailand. Not to mention, transporting tons and tons of those rice through Cambodia, what a slap in the face, eeh?. More than likely, Thailand will export those rice to other countries for profit more than originally bought from Vietnam. Both partners profit from the scheme. They both feed off Cambodia. This is one of the tactics they put in practice to keep Cambodia in control from doing much of exporting. Cambodia is a threat to both of them if allowed to compete fairly. These two guys has been involving in many shapes and forms to keep Cambodia at bay. Very smart for Thailand and Vietnam, eeh? Very dishonestly smart, I must say.

Very unfair. They bought Khmer rice and use Khmer territory to export to each other. Cambodia should impose high tariff or taxes for the Vietnamese trucks to pass through Cambodian territory to go to the Thai borders.

There are news that Thai border police prevented Cambodian agricultural products from being exported to Thailand across the borders. We should do the same by preventing all Thai goods from being exported to Cambodia, after all it is the Thai who will lose as it exported about $3 billion to Cambodia but Cambodia only exported to Thailand for about $42 million a year.

Why don't the Cambodian people slow down and eventually hault the consumtion of Thailand and Vietnam made products selling in Cambodia. This might help Cambodia dependent on neighboring imports. Cambodia should do trade with other ASEAN members beside Thailand and Vietnam. If that is the case, those two neighors seem to be practicing an unfair trade. If I were Cambodian people, that is the first thing I would do, slow down and stop using products made in those two neighbors.
