PHNOM PENH, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's literacy rate among people aged 15-24 has reached 84.7 percent after years of efforts by the government, khmer newspaper reported on Thursday.
"If we consider 15 years old upwards, it has 73.6 percent of literate people. However, among this figure, there are still 26.4 percent of illiterate population, " the Kampuchea Thmei quoted Phon Hon Sin, director of informal education system of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, as saying.
And among the illiterate people, 60 percent of them are women. "Each year we helped 55,000 people to eliminate illiteracy," he said.
"The most of illiterate women have abandoned their education since the beginning of primary. Their dropout rate from primary and secondary schools is about 10 percent across the country and at the higher education, the women enrollment rate is so low and it has about 30 percent only," he said, adding that poverty is mainly the reason why they abandon education.
"Education sectors of the government opened 1,000 literacy classes and another 1,000 literacy classes were set up by organizations with supports from partners," he said.

that is good.!!!!!!
Do we know that Khmer Rouge(Angka Leur, Cap Tan) intention was to annihilated any Khmer who has any trace of education in his/her soul, to reduce Khmer to nothing. The new born Khmer would be blind, dumb, deaf, and mute. Everything had to be destroyed, anything that would wipe out Khmer-ness, anything that could sprout Khmer growth. Khmer had to be exterminated.
Well..what didn't kill Khmer will only make Khmer stronger. We may not know it, but that is the fact. Very few certain ethnic people still exist after 1,200 years of peace and wars in its history. Thai tried it, still trying, Vietnamese tried it, still trying, and Khmer Rouge tried it, didn't work. We Khmer still live. We refused to die.
We are growing stronger, a lot of us are more educated, our horizon is expanding, our hope is stronger, our future will be brighter. We are the Pheonix, slowly rising from the ashes of crash and burn.
I don't believe Cambodia's literacy rate is 84.7%. That's too high for a very poor country like Cambodia. If you go to the countryside, or even in Phnom Penh, you see a lot of poor young children are working to feed their families. They never have the opportunity to go to school. Some may go to schools, but they can't read properly, so their reading skill is still below the "literacy rate" set by world standard.
Assuming they can read and write, no necessarily high school, college, or university gratuates. The statistic is base on averages. Even if the percentage is lower, it's still good, considered the numbers of educated Cambodian killed during the reign of Khmer Rouge. It's a long way coming. The statistic is encouraging. It is something positive for Cambodia. The percentage of literacy rate will get higher as years go on.
