Cambodia Bans Miss Landmine Contest

PHNOM PENH, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen agreed to ban Miss Landmine competition, to be held on Aug 7, after the request from minister of social works, veterans and youth re-habitation, China's Xinhua news agency said citing local media report Monday.

The contest will make the public confuse about the honour and dignity of disabled people especially disabled women, Chinese language newspaper Jian Hua Daily quote the statement signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen as saying.

On behalf of the Cambodian government, Ministry of Social Works, Veterans, Youth re-habitation would like to announce that it would not support any events of Miss Landmine contest and would like to ask the event organisers to stop the activities urgently to protect honour and dignity of Cambodian disabled people especially disabled women, the statement said.

Ngin Saoroath, President of Cambodian disabled persons' Association, plans to organise Miss Landmine Contest on Aug 7 and plan to declare final result in December.

So far, 20 female candidates already registered to join the tournament that also supported from Cambodian Mine Action Authority and Ministry of Women's Affairs, according to Ngin Saoroath.

This pageant follows a successful but highly controversial contest in Angola last year where the world's first Miss Landmine was crowned.

Cambodia has banned the Miss contest for years in late 1990s. And it is estimated that about one million landmines still remain buried in Cambodia. Last year, at least 265 Cambodians were killed or injured by mines and UXOs.
