Mrs. Mu Sochua (pictured), Deputy Secretary-General of the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), has been elected as head of the party's Khmer National Women Movement during the sixth Movement's congress held at party headquarter on 17th July.

After her election, Ms Mu Sochua said she will strive hard to lead the movement toward a moral and just society that has leaders who will say the truth and who will provide justice to the society.

She said she will work hard to increase the proportions of women in the ballot papers in future elections. She declared: "Not only the equality, what is important is the values, the honour and the dignity as women. Whoever dares to attack a woman, it means he is attacking all women in the sonciety in general and that person must not only be accountable to one woman, but must be accountable to all women and to all men who are defending the freedom and the honour of all women."

The sixth Khmer National Women Movement which was attended by 300 members and which was presided over by Ms. Men Moniroth, has voted to change the movement's name from the "Khmer National Women Movement" to "Women Movement of the Sam Rainsy Party".

Mr. Sam Rainsy, president of the SRP, hailed Ms Mu Sochua as a traiblazer who championed women's rights and women's freedom of expression in Cambodia.

He said: "As long as there is Sam Rainsy, the SRP will be loyal to the nation and loyal to the Khmer people. The SRP is resolutely against dictatorship, is resolutely against corruption and the SRP takes this stance for the restoration of our nation and to save our nation, to manage our national society to be truly democratic, non-corrupt and just."

The Khmer National Movement was created in 1997 with its president holding a 3-year term.

The sixth Khmer National Women Movement Congress was attended by representatives of the US and Australian embassies as well as members of the civil society.
