The Human Right Party (HRP) will hold its first congress today, Sunday the 19th at its headquarter in Toul Kork District, Phnom Penh City.

Mr. Yem Ponharith, Secretary-General of the HRP, told RFA that the party's congress is held in accordance with the party's statutes and party's internal rules and regulations. He said: "The important agenda of the congress is to table the reports of the party's achievements in the past years in order to request the National Council to examine whether the party keadership has led the party in the wrong path or the right direction. This is the first point. The second point is that the party leadership will table to the congress the new political platform for the next two years and there will be a debate at the National Council level to see whether we need to review our policies for the next two years."

Mr. Yem Ponharith also said that the congress will be attended by 300 members of the National Council. The congress will also debate about the possibility of a merger with the Sam Rainsy Party. He said: "And the important thing in the congress, like we said before, the important thing for our future works is how do we move forward surrounding an alliance between all democrats."
