Cambodian rice has higher quality than rice from Vietnam and Thailand and is also priced more expensive. However, Cambodia faced difficulties in export its rice to overseas.

Mr. Chan Sophal, president and an analyst for CDRI has said that Cambodian rice is sold more expensive than rice from neigbouring countries simply because Cambodian rice has higher quality than rice from those countries. He said that a kilogram of Cambodian rice is priced between 1600-4000 riels ($0.40-$1 US).

Cambodian traders lack capacity to export rice to other parts of the world. Every year, traders from Vietnam and Thailand came to buy rice from Cambodia then exported them to other countries in the world.

These blood thirsty neighbors to east and west don't want Cambodia to be at their level or better. They will try to stall Cambodia through various sneaky tactics. They don't like competition. They are paranoid when seeing Cambodia improve. Since Cambodia can produce good rice, they are working their ways where Cambodia cannot benefit too much from that. In this case, buying up all Cambodia rices so to prevent Cambodia from exporting to other good market countries.

Cambodia has a free trade agreement with Thailand but several times already that the Thai border authority banned Cambodian traders from exporting Cambodian products such as cassava, rice, maize, corns and other products to Thailand through border points. But Cambodian authority still allow Thai products to be exported to Cambodia through the same border points. Very unfair.

ALL reports on Cambodian "Rice" Exports are TOTALLY FALSE and INACCURATE!!! Cambodia never exported "Rice" but only "Paddy" throuhg informal trade with Thailand and Vietnam... Please CDRI folks and other journalists, get your act right, including the Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries of Cambodia when reporting such misleading news to the public. Get yourself more educated...

Anonynous 10:20, do you not see the reasons why Cambodia cannot export rice? There are great monopoly being exerted on Cambodia by the neighbors to eliminate competition. How often do you see rice being sold in the market outside of Cambodia comes from Cambodia. Earlier comment fairly correct. Rice are bougth off from Cambodia, process in Thailand or Vietnam for export.
