Cambodian businessman plans airport for slated tourism island

Hun Sen's cronies: Kith Meng (L) and CPP Tycoon-Senator Kok An (R)

Phnom Penh - A Cambodian developer plans to build a new airport on the country's largest island, which was leased to his company by the government in 2008, local media reported Wednesday. Kith Meng, chairman of Royal Group, told the Phnom Penh Post newspaper that bulldozers had been sent to the 7,800-hectare island to clear forest for a runway, but he declined to provide more details on the development.

He said the company also plans to construct electricity and water facilities for the island, which has been earmarked as a potential tourist destination.

Kith Meng said he recently travelled to the island with a dozen other potential investors, including casino owner Phu Kok An, who is also a senator for the ruling Cambodian People's Party.

NO AIRPORT!!! THIS WILL MAKE NOISE POLLUTIONS AND DESSTROY THE ISLAND ECOLOGY!!!!WHAT KIND OF TOURIST WOULD WANT TO GO TO A NOISY ISLAND ANYWAY. YES PEOPLE MIGHT KEEP GOING FOR 5 YEARS THEN DEAD SILENT WITH NO TOURISTS AFTER THAT.GO BY BOATS OR SHIPS IS BETTER.I THINK ITS A STUPID IDEAS TO PUT AN AIRPORT IN THAT SMALL ISLAND AND ITS A SHORT SIGHTED DEVELOPEMENT IN TODAY GLOBAL WARMING CONSCIOSNESS WORLD.THEY NEED TO ATTRACT THE POOR TO AND LOCALS TO MAKE THIS PLACE A FAMILY FRIENDLY FOR ALL KHMERS TO APRECIATE SROK KHMER. THAT WE CARE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION TO ENJOY. AFTER ALL THIS IS PROBALY THE LAST BIG ISLAND THAT 100% BELONG TO SROK KHMER.JUST IMAGINE KHMERS LOVE KHMERS GO THERE BECAUSE WE HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMONS TO SHARE AND PRIDE OF OUR LONG LASTING BEAUTIFUL ISLAND THAT WE CAN LOVE IT FOR 1000 OF YEARS.IT WOUD BE THE SECOND MOST APPRECIATED AND PRIDE LIKE OUR ANGKOR WAT STATUS.WHAT DO YOU THINK??

5:09pm, Koh Rong is bigger than Hong Kong island. Hong Kong is one of the busiest airport in the region.

You are right that the noise will destroy the ecology of the island. The fact is that after the developments of this island, there will be no more ecology to be destroyed. The whole of the island's environment will be destroyed to make ways for the tourism developments of the island.

What I worry is that these tourism developments might never benefit the Cambodian people or the Cambodian nation. They will only benefit the corrupt politicians, corrupt businessmen and foreign investors. Remember, no one knows how much money went to state coffers when the island was given as a concession to Kith Meng.

Damn..5:09pm, relax man...Let's not overeacted or assumed something is going to be terribly wrong with Koh Rong. Let's not be nagative about everything of Cambodia. When you're too nagative about Cambodia, Cambodian will only accuse you of a Vietnamese or a Thai.
Anyway, this could be a good thing for business and tourism along coastal region of cambodia, this is a sign of economic progress. I don't think, the airport is so big that it's going to interupt the ecological system on the island.

I'm guessing that it's a small aiport that handles small planes such as a single propeller or a turbo-prop.I don't think there is going to be those loud jet planes landing there. Big planes will land in Preah Sihanouk Airport. The island isn't that big, unlike Koh Tral or Koh Kong. There are alot of these so-called "airports on the islands" all over the world. Some tourists can afford a quick plane ride to the island, that's the choice they have. I'm sure there will be boats and ferries to transport the less affordable tourists to the island.

most khmer don't like to bathe in the 100 degree sun any way. I hope there are more mature trees along the coastal walkways, drive ways, parks, residents buildings, bussiness buildings,etc......after they are done with it. imagine a place where there are air conditioner in the building and businesses and mature trees on all public places and private for all peoples. tourists will flog to it.because it accommodate all sort of people tastes and feel during the days and night.better yet make it 24-7 friendly.i hope they don't make a mistake like the thai islands. their island were ran by europe people so much that it sqeezed out the local's charms and pride and house and hide the slobs and goons. and no beggar and homeless are allowed to. make this place as clean, safe and families friendly as possible, please.
