Hi, I’m here at the galleria 346 in Phuket Town for an art exhibition of a Cambodian artist. The galleria 346 is an old Sino Portuguese building at Junction Bangniew, 346-348 Phuket Road in the old part of Phuket town. Inside the galleria there is an art exhibition called “see you later part 1” with fourteen art works created by a contemporary Cambodian artist named Leang Seckon. His art works are mostly mixed media on canvas which refers to collage kind of work. They deal with political and social changes he observes in Thailand and Cambodia. He assembles together the images of Thai and Cambodian movie stars who once shared the limelight in a smash hit love-story movie across the borders between the two countries, representing the nostalgia of a once harmonious relationship between Thailand and Cambodia. I talked to Leang about his inspiration and his favorite pictures:
I think Leang’s art works are fabulous and interesting because I have never seen anything like them before. His art works are very expressive in a very powerful way. His creation of each painting has its own meaning hidden behind all of them. For example his second favorite piece of work was ‘Two Lungs’ which was about people who love each other, talking together, breathing together, and two hearts from a wedding invitation; to lose one lung is very difficult.
