Two MPs from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, Mrs. Mu Sochua and Mr. Ho Van, were stripped of their parliamentary immunity on the morning of Monday 22nd June in a move observers said was designed to intimidate and silence government's critics, reports Deum Ampil.

The two were involved in legal wranglings with government leaders, with Mrs. Mu Sochua sued by Prime Minister Hun Sen and Mr. Ho Vann sued by 22 military officers.

91 parliamentarians out of 111 MPs present in the National Assembly session voted to lift the pair's parliamentary immunity. Immediately after the lifting of the pair's immunity, all MPs from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party and Human Right Party walked out of the parliamentary session by wearing masks in protests. They then held a press conference outside of the parliament to denounce the move by the government's MPs.

Mr. Cheam Yeap, an MP from the ruling Cambodian People's Party told reporters that the lifting of the pair's parliamentary immunity was done in accordance with the request from the Justice Ministry so that the court can proceed with the case against them. If the court found that they are not guilty of the charges, their immunity will be re-instated, he said.

Mr. Cheam Yeap also said that the opposition MPs had violated the internal rules of parliament by staging a walkout after two of their colleagues were stripped of their parliamentary immunity.

Several Cambodian non-governmental organisations had earlier threatened to organise mass demonstrations if Mrs. Mu Sochua's immunity was lifted, with Mr. Rong Chhun, president of the Cambodian Independent Teachers Association warned that his and other NOGs will mobile 85,000 people to rally against the government's move. Whether Mr. Rong Chhun can make true of his words remain to be seen.

Hun Sen has become more dictatorial by the day. I think he is asking for trouble. Sooner or later, the people or his party will turn against his dictatorial rule. The Mu Sochua's case has made Hun Sen looking like a fool and his image will be more tarnished as her case is more internationally sympathetic than ordinary cases. Hun Sen will soon be condemned by the international community, especially the donor countries.

This is the personal issue why using the govt to settle his case. The PM is using the legacy of Khmer Rouge. Will he get away with all the actions he have done to every innocent khmer people?
