The editor of Khmer Machas Srok has indicated that he is willing to publish the corrections to the articles that allegedly 'defamed' Deputy Prime Minister Sok An which prompted the latter to lodge a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper, reports Khmer Sthapana.

Mr. Hang Chakra, editor of Khmer Mchas Srok, who is the subject of the suit, said on 3rd June that he will publishh the corrections in his newspaper if the suit against him is dropped, but will not agree to make an apology to Deputy PM Sok An because he said that he had done nothing wrong. He said that if he apologised, it is like an admission of guilt which he said he had not committed. He said that he makes this concession because he is afraid that he might go to jail because other editors had been previously jailed for similar lawsuits.

Mr. Chuong Chu Ngy, Mr. Hang Chakra's lawyer, said Mr. Sok Ann has no case against his client. He said the two charges against his client of 'incitement to cause divisions within the government' and 'disinformation' are false. He said his client has not caused any 'chaos' within the government and his client is not guilty of disinformation either.

On 5-7th April, Khmer Mchas Srok had published two articles titled "Officials from Sok An's faction face removals from their positions" and "Hun Sen breaks the nests of bad and corrupt officials working under Sok An" which alleged rampant corruption committed by officials working under Sok An's supervision.

On 11th May, Sok An lodged a defamation lawsuit against Khmer Mchas Srok. Human right groups said that the lawsuit was intended to frighten and to silence journalists.
