Khmer Krom plan to protest at the UN Summit on human rights

Khmers Krom around the world will converge in Geneva to protest against the human right violations by Vietnam during the UN Human Right Council's conference in Switzerland, reports Radio Free Asia.

About 400 people are expected to attend. Most of them will come from the United States, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Canada and Switzerland.

During the conference, the UN Human Right Council will require Vietnam to table a reports on the human right situations in Vietnam for the last 4 years.

Mr. Thach Ngoc Thach, president of World Federation of Khmer Kampuchea Krom, said: "(During the protest) we will hold a prayer seesion in from of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi located in front of the UN headquarter in order to appeal to all 47 articipant countries and their government for the whole day until tommorrow."

He continued: "Our aims is to ensure that Khmer Krom have their own separate independent rights to practise their Buddhist faith. We want them to have their independence right (on religious practices) and not fall under the control of the Vietnamese government. Secondly, we want tohem to return all confiscated lands to our Khmer Krom people. Thirdly, we demand equal rights on culture and education such as allow Khmer Krom children equal rights to receive scholarship to study overeas like children from other ethnic backgrounds living in Vietnam."

According to the World Federation of Khmer Kampuchea Krom, the UN Human Rights Coucil will convene in Geneva in three weeks time, says RFA.
