Cambodian tourism officials said on Saturday 18th April that the numbers of tourists visiting Battambang during the Khmer New Year had increased but their spendings had decreased, reports Radio Free Asia.

Mr. Mok Sindara, deputy president of Battambang Tourism Department, said that local tourists flocking to Battambang for the three day festivities had increased to 110,00 compared to only 150,000 visitors to Battambang for the whole of last year. But, he said, while the numbers of tourists had increased, the money they spent had decreased as a result of the world economic downturn.

Mr. Sindara said that the tourists had flocked to eight of the 35 tourist spots in Battambang during the 3 days festivities.

Mr. Huy Rorm, chairman of Tourism Department at Rattanak Mondul said that food vendors reported that their sales had dropped by 45% from last year.

Every year, local tourists liked to visit Battambang's attractions like Phnom Sampov, Komping
Puoy Dam, Prasat Banon, Wat Ek Phnom, Rattanak Mundol Tourist Park.
