Thaksin fled United Arab Emirates after it promised to cooperate with Thailand to arrest him

Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra (pictured), the fugitive ex-Thai PM, has fled the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to an African country, after the UAE agreed to a request from the Thai government to arrest and extradite him to Thailand, reports Deum Ampil newspaper quoting The Nation newspaper.

The Nation quoting Mr. Phanich Wikitset, Deputy Minister of the Cabinet, published in its 23rd April edition as saying that Mr. Thaksin had fled the UAE to Liberia on 20th April.

Mr. Phanich, after visiting the UAE for 3 days, told reporters that the UAE Foreign Ministry told him that Mr. Thaksin had arrived in the UARE since 27th March on a business visa. He said that Mr. Thaksin had since used the UAE as his political launch pad to direct the red-shirted protesters to cause chaos in Bangkok during the Thai New Yew festivities.

The Thai government had since issued an arrest warrant for the fugitive ex-PM and Interpol has been approached to help in the apprehension of Mr. Thaksin.

The Nation had claimed that Mr. Thaksin is currently in hiding in Liberia and according to the broadcast of the Liberian Radio on Tuesday, Mr. Thaksin has met Liberian leaders to discuss about his investment proposals in the country. The Nation claimed that Mr. Thaksin had met Vice-President of Liberia, Mr. Joseph Boakai, to discuss about a big investment project in the country.

The Nation claimed that, after arriving in Liberia on Tuesday, Mr. Thaksin on Wednesday had continued his journey to other African countries, including the Ivory Coast. In the meeting with other African leaders, Mr. Thaksin was encouraged to invest heavily in the countries that are abundant in mineral and oil resources, reports Deum Ampil.
