Senior Cambodian officials on Saturday dismissed reports that former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra is hiding in Cambodia, reported Deum Ampil newspaper.
Mr. Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Phay Siphan, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, dismissed reports that Thaksin, who is a long time friend of Cambodian PM Hun Sen, had been flown by a helicopter to Mr. Hun Sen's residence at Tuol Krosaing from an unknown location.
Mr. Koy Kuong said: "The Bangkok Post as well as Mr. Theptai Senapong, spokesman for Thai PM Abhisit, claimed that Mr. Thaksin is living near Prime Minister Hun Sen's house. It is completely untrue and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cambodian government strongly deny this baseless information."
Mr. Phay Siphan, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, also dismissed the rumours. "I dismiss this untrue and baseless information", he said.
Sources said that the Thaksin-in-Cambodia's rumours have been circulating to the media after the deadly clashes between Cambodian and Thai troops on 3rd of April.
The same sources claimed that the Thai military attache based in the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh was the one who passed the information to the Thai Ministry of Defence that Mr. Thaksin is hiding in Cambodia.
Gen. Anupong Paojinda, Thai Commander-in-Chief, told TNA (Thai News Agency?) that Thai officials are actively following the information with interests and are investigating to verify the veracity of the claims.
