Hong Kong and Thailand are edging closer to agreeing on an extradition treaty -- a move that could enable the government to bring fugitive ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra back to the country, according to the Sunday Morning Post.
The news report said talks over this treaty between authorities from the two countries are at an advanced stage, and it could affect the deposed premier who is facing a two-year jail sentence after the Supreme Court found him guilty of corruption in the Ratchadaphisek land purchase scandal.
Office of the Attorney General (OAG)'s department of foreign litigation director-general Sirisak Tiyaphan said he was not informed about this, but talks between the OAG and Hong Kong officials are still ongoing.
Many criminals are using this legal loophole since both countries do not have an extradition treaty between them, Mr Sirisak said.
However, Thaksin's personal spokesman Pongthep Thepkanjana said the news about the extradition treaty would not affect the former premier.
He said Thaksin will not travel to Hong Kong this Thursday to deliver a speech at the Foreign Correspondent's Club of Hong Kong.
Thaksin earlier postponed his speech delivery last Monday.
