Thai commerce minister to visit Cambodia

BANGKOK, March 19 (TNA) -Thailand’s Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai will pay a two-day official visit to Cambodia, starting March 22, aimed at boosting trade between the two countries, a ministry spokesman said Thursday.

Mrs. Pornthiva’s upcoming visit comes as combined trade between the neighbouring countries reached US$2.13 billion last year, but fell dramastically in January due to the global financial crisis.

Thailand exports sugar, furnished oil products, iron, steel, cement, beverages and chemical products to Cambodia. Goods imported from Cambodia are vegetables, fruits, meat, garments and clothes.

During her stay in Cambodia, Mrs. Pornthiva will call on her Cambodian counterpart Cham Prasidh, meet more than 50 Thai businessmen investing in that country and preside over the Made in Thailand Exhibition 2009 being held March 22-26.

A total of 111 booths have been booked by 83 firms to display their products at the exhibition. Goods to be exhibited include food, beauty and cosmetics products, electrical appliances, construction materials, One Tambon One Product (OTOP) and furniture, the spokesman said.

Mrs. Pornthiva is also scheduled to preside at the presentation of ‘Thai Select’ certificates to five Thai restaurants, witness the signing of three contracts -- including the sale of 500 tonnes of Thai fertilizer to a Cambodian firm, a joint investment on building an alcohol distillery by Eagle (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and Cambodia’s Suoy Chheng Investment Co., Ltd., and a joint investment on building a water distribution system for agricultural applications in Kampong Thom province.
