Mrs. Mu Sochua (pictured), MP for the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, said that she was prevented from attending the conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in the Inter-Continental Hotel in Phnom Penh held on 9th March, 2009. The chief of security who prevented her from entering the building said that he was ordered from the "top" not to let her into the building.
Ms. Mu Sochua said that she received the invitation to attend the conference, but she went to the conference a bit late because she has to attend to the hospital and therefore was unable to receive a badge/pass from the organisers.
Ms. Mu Sochua told Radio Free Asia that the prevention of her from attending the conference is a political harrassment of opposition MPs. She added that it is also an insult to the dignity of an MP and it is sexist because she is a woman.
This is the second time that Ms. Mu Sochua was prevented from attending an international conference in Phnom Penh. In early February, she was prevented from attending a Third Economic Forum orgainsed by the Cambodian Economic Authority, even after the intervention of the German ambassador.
