A shoot out in the middle of the night on 18th March, 2009 in Phnom Penh between bodyguards from the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces soldiers (RCAF) and a group of men has resulted in one dead and two wounded.
According to witnesses, the shootings happened at 8pm, on Monivong Boulevard at Daun Penh District.
One witness said that he saw one man lay dead in a pool of blood with his accomplice, Oun Sarin, 32, wounded who, before the shootings, were riding the motorcycle bearing a number plate RCAF 09-1.0007.
The dead man was later identified as 35 year-old Dy Chan Thea, who is the bodyguard of a 3-star general who in turn is a bodyguard of one of the country's top leaders.
witnesses said that, after shooting dead and wounded the VIP's bodyguards, the unknown gunmen, one presumably to be wounded, escaped on foot with the surviving bodyguards chasing and shooting from behind.
According to some witnesses, it seems that the unknown group of gunmen were waiting to assinate the VIP who was riding in a luxury car escorted by his bodyguards. They said that they saw a man got off the motorcycle and walked toward that luxury car carrying the VIP. The bodyguard who saw the man, jumped off his motorcyle and the scuffle broke out and the gun shot was heard and the bodyguard fell to the ground, shot the in the neck.
some witnesses said that, the scuffle happened when the bodyguards tried to block a group of men on motorcyle from riding on the road while making way for the VIP's car to exit the restaurant where he had dined earlier.
But some witnesses said that the attack seem to be a planned attack as they said that they saw some men were waiting and hiding in flower garden to shoot the VIP.
Khmer Sthapana newspaper reported that, according to witnesses, two groups of armed men walked pass each other and got into an argument. Witnesses said, suddenly one bodyguard jumped off his motorbike to punch the guy from the other group. But unfortunately, the other guy pulled out his gun and pointed at the stomach of the bodyguard and the scuffle broke out and the bodyguard was shot in the neck. Then the shoot out started, but the unknown group run away, chased and shot from behind by the surviving body guards.
