Vietnam, Cambodia to boost ties

Vietnam always nurtures its traditional ties and cooperation with Cambodia and sees it as an invaluable asset that both countries need to maintain and develop, said the National Assembly Chairman, Nguyen Phu Trong, on January 16.

He was speaking at talks with Mr. Samdec Heng Samrin, Chairman of the Cambodian National Assembly, honorary president and member of the standing board of the Central Committee of the Cambodian People’s Party, who arrived in Ha Noi on January 15 for a five-day visit.

Chairman Heng Samrin said the two legislative bodies should strengthen cooperation in implementation of agreements signed between the two countries.

Vietnam and Cambodia would continue exchanging high-level delegations of national assemblies and their agencies to share information and experiences, the two leaders agreed.

They also agreed that the two sides would continue giving support to each other at regional and international forums, supervising the implementation of projects and economic cooperation agreements for the sake of each country’s interest, as well as for peace and development in the region.

The two countries should make a greater effort to complete border demarcation and landmark planting by mid 2012 as scheduled.

On the same day, in talks with Chairman Heng Samrin, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung briefed him on Vietnam’s socio-economic development. Last year, despite various difficulties, Vietnam still remained politically and socially stable, and posted a GDP growth of 6.23 percent, he said.

Chairman Samrin highly appreciated Vietnam’s efforts to overcome difficulties and for its assistance to Cambodia.

The two sides agreed that Vietnam and Cambodia would strive to boost trade between the two countries to $2 billion by 2010.
