Presidents of the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) and Human Right Party (HRP) have signed a joint statement on 15th January to form a political alliance to effect change in the Cambodian society.
Mr. Sam Rainsy, president of the SRP said that this alliance is a new political force and a new democratic choice for the people of Cambodia.
He said: “The SRP and the HRP have formed a grand democratic movement to work for a change. This democratic movement is a political force that unite all patriots, democrats and justice-lovers in order to provide a new choice for the people who demand and who long for that change.”
In relations to the 2012 commune elections and the 2013 general election, Mr.. Sam Rainsy said: “We have a longer vision than that (the alliance). We have thought about the 2012 commune elections and the 2013 general election which we will field a joint list of the candidates to contest the elections. By then, all the parties that joined in the Democratic Movement of Change will merge to become one single party and field our candidates in a single list (to contest the elections).”
In relations to this SRP-HRP alliance, Mr. Kem Sokha, president of the HRP, said: “We have joined to form a political movement called ‘Democratic Movement for Change’ for the purpose of change. What does this change mean? Because we want to make it easier for the people to make their choices in the 2012 and 2013 elections by presenting our candidates in a single list (to contest the elections).”
Mr. Kem Sokha said that he wanted Mr. Sam Rainsy to be the president of this alliance and the candidate for the prime minister in the 2013 election.
Mr. Hang Chhaya, executive chairman of the Khmer Institute of Democracy, said that this alliance is a good thing and it will help enhance the debates in the parliament.
Mr. Hang Chhaya said: “If both parties have similar views or the same views, it is better for them to form an alliance rather than work separately.”
Please note that in the 2008 election, the SRP won 26 seats, the HRP won 3 seats and the Cambodian People’s Party won 90 seats.//
