Japanese foreign minister held separate talks with Cambodian leaders and Thai officials on the Preah Vihear issues during his visit to three countries in the South East Asian region.

During a press conference at the Le Royale Hotel in Phnom Penh, Mr. Takeshi Akamatsu, press secretary of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, said that Preah Vihear issue is one of the agenda on talks between the Japanese Foreign Minister, Mr. Hirofumi Nakasone, and Prime Minister Hun Sen at the Cambodian Foreign Ministry in Phnom Penh on Sunday.

He said that Mr. Hun Sen told the Japanese foreign minister about issues related to the Preah Vihear conflict which Mr. Hun Sen stressed that the issue has now returned to normality.

Mr. Takeshi said that the Japanese foreign minister told Mr. Hun Sen that Japan wanted to see the Preah Vihear conflict resolved peacefully without force being used.

The Japanese foreign minister has discussed the Preah Vihear issues with Thailand’s foreign minister, Mr. Kasit Piromya, at Bangkok Airport before he continues his journey to Cambodia. Mr. Takesi said that the Japanese told Thailand to resolve the Preah Vihear issues peacefully without using force. He added that Japan will not take sides.

Thailand’s prime minister, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, earlier said that he hopes that Cambodia will not raise the Preah Vihear issue at the upcoming Asean Summit.

(Cambodian government spokesman, Mr. Khieu Kanharith, said that Cambodia will raise the Preah Vihear issues with Thailand’s prime minister on the sideline of the Asean Summit).

In relations to the constructions of roads to Preah Vihear by Cambodia, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva said that he had already received this information and said that it is essential that the matter be discussed between Cambodia and Thailand related to the agreements that both countries must not change the environment in the areas that can affect the demarcation works of the borders. He said that, in the past, Thailand had protested to Cambodia on many occasions (regarding road constructions by Cambodia in the areas) and a new protest will soon by sent to the Cambodian government regarding this (road construction) matter.//
