Singer/songwriter writer Kate Miller-Heidke has performed at an historical concert at Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia. Organised by MTV EXIT, it was the first ever rock concert to take place at the ancient temple, and was held to spread awareness of the plight of victims of human trafficking. |
Miller-Heidke was the only Australian on the bill which featured international acts Placebo, Duncan Sheik and various Cambodian bands. Miller-Heidke described the concert as "the most amazing gig I've ever done". "The setting was magical and timeless as soon as the music started, all these Khmers came out of the forest and were dancing under the stars," she said. MTV EXIT is a charitable organisation in partnership with MTV Asia, and is holding a series of high profile concerts around the South East Asian region to raise awareness among possible victims of human exploitation. "I was shocked to discover there are more slaves today than have ever existed throughout history," said Miller-Heidke. "Not thousands but millions of people are being forced into sex slavery and slave labour. It is a huge problem and it is happening in our neighbourhood'. Angkor Wat is an architectural masterpiece, part of a huge temple complex built in the Cambodian jungle in the 12th century A.D. "While we were doing sound check, about a dozen Buddhist monks in their saffron robes were peering out of the temple at us, curious about what was going on. It was utterly surreal" said Miller-Heidke. "I felt extremely moved watching the other bands play in that amazing setting for such an important cause. It was humbling to be there and I will never forget the experience". |
