Border talks with Thailand stalled

Radio Free Asia
Reported by Khmerization

Mr. Phay Siphan, Secretary of State of Cambodia and spokesman for the Council of Ministers said that border talks with Thailand has delayed and stalled due to the political crisis in Thailand.

Last week, protesters occupied all Thai international airports and shut down all international flights. To break the deadlock, the Thai Constitutional Court dissolved the ruling People Power Party and dismissed the government of Mr. Somchai Wongsawat.

Mr. Phay Siphan said: "Thailand has no representative to talk with us because Thailand is going through a transition of changing a prime minister. The choosing of the new Thai prime minister is an obstacle (to the border talks)."

However, he said that the military situation in the Preah Vihear areas remained calm. He said: "There is nothing to worry about after we had agreed to reconcile our differences in the last meeting in Siem Reap."

Mr. Khieu Kanharith said that Cambodia and Thailand need to avoid wars at all cost. He said: "On the issue of Preah Vihear I said many times before that originally it happened because of the internal affairs of Thailand. But the Thai opposition parties made the Preah Vihear issue as a political issue, so it will talke a bit longer to resolve. Like I said before that we have this kind of issue for over 100 years, so if it takes one year, two years it doesn't matter. The important thing is to avoid armed confrontations."
