Theories behind Thaksin's divorce

The divorce between former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Khunying Potjaman may not need to be justified as his personal spokesman Pongthep Thepkanchana has suggested.

Yet, it has been interpreted in different ways. One theory has it that Thaksin and Khunying Potjaman are still on good terms but they must divorce as Thaksin needs to move into high gear in his political fights. He does not want to be concerned about his wife and children.

Supporting this theory, Pracha Prasopdee, People Power party (PPP) MP for Samut Prakan province, said Thaksin sympathised with his wife and children as they had to suffer from unfair accusations originally brought against him. Khunying Potjaman understood that Thaksin wanted to protect them, Mr Pracha added.

Some people close to Thaksin predict that he will step up the struggle to clear his name.

MPs who meet him overseas tell Thaksin that most Thais support him, that he is the only one who can serve the nation and that MPs are ready to follow his orders.

Other PPP MPs believe that MPs who talk in that way only want to exploit Thaksin's popularity to pave their own way to the House after the next election.

Thaksin used to claim overseas that the government bullied him. Such a claim will not sound good any more as his brother-in-law is now head of the government.Yet there is another theory behind the divorce and it points to the possibility that Thaksin and Khunying Potjaman are really at odds.

Supporters of the theory noted that Khunying Potjaman had not accepted the way Thaksin handled politics and had waited for the right time to end her concerns.

This is in line with an account from a source close to Thaksin.

"Khunying Or [Khunying Potjaman's nickname] has had enough of politics. We have built up everything together. This loss [the divorce] is the greatest loss since the Sept 19, 2006 coup," the source quoted Thaksin as telling MPs who met him in Hong Kong recently.

According to the source, Khunying Potjaman is tired of following Thaksin overseas.

The family conflict rests not only with Thaksin and Khunying Potjaman but also with Thaksin's family and Khunying Potjaman's Damapong family. Damapong is her maiden name.

"While Thaksin was prime minister, political power rested with the Damapong family led by Khunying Potjaman and her brother Banpot Damapong.

"Today with Mr Somchai as prime minister, political power rests with the Shinawatra family led by Yaowapa Wongsawat. The Damapongs are excluded and are suffering the political impact," said the source.

Mrs Yaowapa is Thaksin's younger sister and Mr Somchai's wife.

The conflict between both families is a real threat against the PPP.
