Cambodian military commanders have reportedly agreed to release 13 Thai troops captured during fighting near the Preah Vihear temple site.

The release was agreed at a meeting of military commanders near the World Heritage listed site.

The two sides also said they would not increase troop numbers along the disputed frontier, where growing tensions over territory flared on Wednesday in a clash that killed at least two Cambodians.

A Thai military spokesman says little headway was made on withdrawing troops from a number of disputed border areas.

The Phnom Penh Post says senior military officials will meet again in Siem Reap on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat says he will seek face-to-face talks with Cambodia's leader Hun Sen to try to ease the growing border conflict.

Speaking after visiting Thai troops along the border, Mr. Somchai said the two leaders should have an opportunity to talk.

He echoed Mr. Hun Sen's comments on Friday that outside mediation was not needed to resolve the dispute.

Both leaders are expected to attend a Southeast Asian meeting in Beijing this week to discuss the global financial crisis, but it is not clear whether they will meet on the sidelines.
