But the neighbors acknowledged they have failed to end the long-running border dispute that has stirred up nationalist anger on both sides.
Foreign ministers from the two Southeast Asian nations also agreed
after more than 12 hours of discussions Monday to hold further meetings on how to demarcate a slice of land near the 11th century Preah Vihear temple. No date was set for the next meeting.
The two sides agreed to pull back about 400 Thai and 800 Cambodian troops stationed inside and around a pagoda located about 300 meters (980 feet) west of the temple complex. It is unclear, however, where those troops will be sent or when the move will take place.
A total of 4,000 from both countries have been deployed to the site.
