Chinese, Cambodian Leaders Exchange Greetings on 50th Anniversary of Ties

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) - Chinese and Cambodian leaders exchanged congratulatory messages on Saturday to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), said in a message that in the past 50 years, bilateral ties developed smoothly and the two countries maintained close, high-level contacts. Wu said mutually beneficial cooperation has grown rapidly and yielded outstanding results, which have brought visible benefit for the two peoples.

He said the NPC is willing to join hands with its Cambodian counterpart to make new contributions to the all-round and in-depth development of relations between the two countries.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said in his message that the two countries have enjoyed friendship for a long time. With joint efforts, the partnership of all-round cooperation between the two countries has developed steadily, the premier said.

Wen said the Chinese government attaches great importance to the development of relations with Cambodia. He said China is willing, together with the Cambodian government, to promote their traditional friendship and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation so as to benefit the two peoples.

Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said in his message that in the past half century, bilateral relations have maintained a good trend of development and cooperation in various fields is very effective.

The two countries support each other on international and regional issues, he said, adding that the CPPCC is ready to make joint efforts with the Cambodian Senate to further the all-round development of bilateral ties.

President of the Cambodian National Assembly Heng Samrim, Prime Minister Hun Sen and Senate President Chea Sim also sent congratulatory messages to their Chinese counterparts.

They said in their message that during the past 50 years the excellent friendship and cooperation between the two countries, cultivated by Cambodian former King Norodom Sihanouk and successive Chinese leaders, have been cherished, steadily consolidated and deepened day by day.

They said the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries will serve as a strong stimulus for the advancement of the traditional ties of amity and dynamic cooperation.

They pledged that the Cambodian parliament, government and people will always adhere to the one-China policy.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong also exchanged congratulations.
