Tournament focus fair trade

EYES ON THE BALL: Musashi Kumagami and Tammem Alhosain compete for possession during Sunday's six-a-side football festival at Saxton Field.

The Cambodian Allstars not only got to taste tournament success but also support a humanitarian cause after winning the Nelson Fair Trade Trophy football festival at Saxton Field on Sunday.

The Cambodian Allstars beat the Nelson English Centre 3-1 in the final, with the Nelson English Centre named the best sports team at the event. The semifinals were both decided on penalty shootouts, with the Cambodian Allstars beating The Good the Bad and the Ugly 1-0 and the Nelson English Centre beating A Touch of Dutch 3-2.
The tournament was organised by members of Nelson Trade Aid, the Green Party and Pomeroys Coffee and Tea Company and involved eight six-a-side teams in a knockout format.
It was designed to help promote the use of Fair Trade footballs which are manufactured in Pakistan in the same town where over 60 percent of the world's footballs are made. Fair Trade does not involve the use of child labour and the men and women who produce the footballs are paid a fair wage. They are also entitled to free medical care, with education provided for the children.
Also competing were the Cambodian Allstars Juniors, A Touch of Dutch, Dutch Delight, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Coffee Stains (Pomeroys) and the Green Traders a composite Trade Aid and Green Party team. Proceeds from Sunday's tournament and other Fair Trade Fortnight events will help provide Fair Trade balls for local primary schools.
