LOS ANGELES (AP) ― A federal prosecutor says a native of Cambodia unleashed an attack to overthrow the government of that country but the plot failed when only 200 supporters showed up to fight in the capitol city of Phnom Phen. In his opening statement Wednesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Lamar Baker told jurors Yasith Chhun was willing to risk other people's lives in the failed conspiracy in 2000 known as Operation Volcano. Defense attorney Richard Callahan says his client, a U.S. citizen, was trying to save the country where he was born and raised, and had no intent to murder or injure anyone. Chhun is charged with four counts of conspiracy and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
