TAIPEI, Jan. 7 Asia Pulse - The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) plans to open branch offices in Pakistan, Cambodia and Myanmar to help local businesspeople explore new markets in Asia, Council Chairman Hsu Chih-jen said in a news conference Friday.
Hsu said the new offices were being opened as part of the council's ongoing efforts to find new markets for Taiwan's exports, which had already led to the expansion of the number of TAITRA branches from 36 in 2003 to 53 in 2007.
Looking to tap markets in southern Asia, Hsu said his council will organize trade-promotion delegations to Myanmar and Cambodia and recruit local businesspeople to take part in four trade shows in Pakistan this year.
At Friday's news conference, Hsu said Taiwan's foreign trade in 2007 stood at US$460 billion, with a trade surplus of US$25 billion.
He noted TAITRA's success in negotiating Taiwan fruit exports to China and persuading China not to stop gravel exports to Taiwan, and said the council's next task would be to help Central and South American allies find a market for their coffee in Taiwan.
