Concert to raise money for Cambodian school

KIRKLAND — Hamilton College employees and community members will use their musical talents to help build a school for Cambodian children during the Community Holiday Concert Sunday at the Kirkland Arts Center.

The event, which is from 4:30 to 6 p.m., is free, but donations will be accepted for the creation of the school.

The goal of establishing the school is to help educate the country’s children and prevent them from falling into human trafficking, organizers said.

“I think it’s really just for the children,” said Amy James, organizer of the music portion of the fundraiser and coordinator of special programs at Hamilton College. “We have the good fortune of living in the Clinton community. We hope this fundraiser will help the children.”

The school will cost about $13,000 to build. So far, the group has raised $10,000 through bake sales, bike races and garage sales.

“We have close friends who were originally from Cambodia — they came over in the ’70s,” said Tom Serwatka, a volunteer for the fundraiser. “The country has been through some tough times, and education is the major tool to change the economy and the conditions.”

In addition to college employees performing during the event, the Clinton High School Select Choir and the Golden Stings Quartet, a private local string ensemble, also will perform.

“It’s sort of more of a variety of people performing,” James said. “We’ve been practicing, and we’ve been rehearsing. It’s been a lot of fun.”
