Sam Rainsy(pictured), the leader of the largest opposition party in Cambodia, rejected the recent rumor claiming that he met with Hun Sen for a secret negotiation at Hun Sen’s villa in Tuol Krasaing, Takhmao city, in order to look for a mean to form a coalition government between the SRP and the CPP after the upcoming 2008 general election. The SRP-leaning Moneaksekar Khmer newspaper reported this Wednesday that Sam Rainsy denied this information, claiming that the SRP never hold secret negotiations with the CPP because the SRP is currently strengthening its force at the grass root level in order to seek for support to win the 27 July 2008 general election.Moneaksekar Khmer quoted Sam Rainsy as saying: “It did not happen at all, I am confirming that we are working to win the number 1 position during the election. We work with those who respect the same ideals as the SRP, and respect the political programs set by the SRP. We can work with those who have the same goals, the same standings, and the same ideals as the SRP, we’ll never refuse those people.”Moneaksekar Khmer also indicated that the CPP also rejected this rumor through Khieu Kanharith, its spokesman, who said that there is no negotiation between the CPP and the SRP.A high ranking SRP official told the newspaper that the spread of this rumor was done with bad intention in order to bring down the SRP popularity because those who spread the rumor know that the SRP is a strong competitor to the CPP during the upcoming general election. This is a subterfuge created by those who want to undermine the SRP.The same anonymous SRP official said also that if Sam Rainsy met to negotiate in secret with Hun Sen as the rumor claims, this information could not be hidden because some of the CPP officials would surely reveal it to the public. Therefore, the invention of this rumor cannot undermine the SRP simply because the truth is the truth.Moneaksekar Khmer also quoted civil society officials who said that the spread of the rumor claiming that Sam Rainsy met to negotiate with Hun Sen in order to form the government after the 2008 general election was done with the intention of undermining the SRP popularity. Nevertheless, Moneaksekar said that this information could not undermine the SRP popularity, simply because Sam Rainsy did not negotiate with Hun Sen as the rumor claimed.
