Australia to Build a New Embassy in Cambodia

Dear Readers,
According to Australian media reports which did investigations on Kith Meng's business dealings in Cambodia they found that many land sites owned by Kith Meng are very shadowy and some of them are land sites bought with the forced eviction of the poor land owners. On the contrary, the investigations did find that most of his businesses, including the national lottery, CTN TV, ANZ bank, Mobitel Mobile Phone and other businesses are clean and legitimate businesses. The investigations found that the land where the Australian embassy bought from Kith Meng is a vacant block. The land was not owned by any slum-residents. But still, there are claims that this particular block of land is a land grabbed from the slum-dwellers.

The Australian embassy in Cambodia organized a celebration for the foundation pouring of a new embassy building in Phnom Penh on 14 November 2007. The new building is located to the south of the National Assembly and the ministry of Foreign Affairs. Australian ambassador Margaret Adamson explained that there are two reasons for this new construction: (1) A large number of embassy employees could not accomplish their work in the current embassy building which is very tight, whereas, over the years, the number of embassy employees has grown to about 70; (2) Ambassador Adamson said that Australia wants to increase the knowledge of Australia in Cambodia in order to reach cooperation between the two countries to achieve lasting peace, social and economic development in Cambodia. Amb. Adamson said that the new building will be inaugurated in 18 months.
