Opposition will not join the parliament until a new election: Sam Rainsy

Give our kids a better deal
PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) – The Opposition leader reaffirmed that the Cambodia National Rescue Party would not join the National Assembly until there is an agreement on new election.

“We will not join the Assembly until there is an agreement on the holding of a new election,” Sam Rainsy said in a video clip posted Thursday on his Facebook page.

Rainsy said the new election issues are divided into two different points –the date of new election, and the election reform to ensure transparency, freedom and fairness for any future poll.

“Fixing the date of the upcoming election is a political issue which has not even been tackled yet,” He said.

“Election reform is a more technical issue which has been discussed. However, the date of new election in the future, shall be addressed beforehand,” he added.

According to official election results, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party led by Prime Minister Hun Sen won 68 seats against 55 seats for the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party.

But the opposition rejected the results announced by the National Election Committee, calling for investigation into the election irregularities, and re-election.

Hun Sen, however, said that the re-election is “impossible”.
