Two special economic zones will be set up in two locations - between
Aranyaprathet district in Sa Kaeo province and Poipet town in Cambodia's
Banteay Meancheay, and Trat's Klong Yai district and Koh Kong province
in Cambodia - Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said after the
first meeting of the Joint Commission on Border Area Development and
Connectivity in Phnom Penh.
Mr Surapong and Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong also pledged
to turn four temporary checkpoints into permanent crossings to increase
trade, transport and people's contact.
The checkpoints are located between Chong Arn Ma in Nam Yuen
district, Ubon Ratchathani, and An Ses in Preah Vihear province of
Cambodia, Ban Khao Din in Sa Kaeo and Phom Dei in Battambang, Ban Tha
Sen in Trat's Muang district and Thmor Da of Pursat, and Chong Sai Ta Ku
in the Ban Kruat district of Buri Ram and Chup Koki in Udon Meancheay.
The upgrade will start after the two countries demarcate the order areas, he said.
The checkpoints project is among a dozen areas of planned development
between the two countries, which include schemes to boost road and
railway links.
Thailand will rehabilitate the six-kilometre-long tracks from
Aranyaprathet to Klong Luek opposite Poipet, after already supporting
Cambodia's efforts to rebuild the 48-kilometre-long railway from Poipet
to Sisophon. The two countries also agreed to open new a border
checkpoint at Nong Aide in Aranyaprathet and Strung Bot near Poipet.
