Land activists meet World Bank official

Land activists protest outside World Bank's office

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) - Nine land activists held a two-hour meeting with a World Bank official Thursday after about 50 protested outside the bank's office, an activist said.

Heng Mom, a resident of Boeung Kok, a property development site, said the activists complained about not receiving any compensation after being evicted from 12.44 hectares of land.

"The World Bank really paid much attention to us and promised to continue its examination," she said.

In addition to seeking land titles for 57 families, the activists are demanding the release of fellow activists jailed in recent months.

"We are not opposed to loans from the World Bank to the government but we want the World Bank to consider and examine its aid very closely," Heng Mom said.

"We wanted to tell the World Bank that residents in Boeung Kok have not yet had any success," she said.

"It doesn't mean we want the World Bank to stop its aid but we want them to help residents by urging the government to offer land titles."
